AR HP Reveal Activity Reflection
Ok, full disclosure. I see the potential of AR's use in the classroom.
However, that being said this assignment was a serious task and an incredibly frustrating experience.
After messing about with a few different AR apps I ultimately decided to use HP Reveal. This program was the most user-friendly, (this is being generous) although it was not exactly easy to make work the way I wanted. I struggled to find trigger images I wanted to use to fit my vision that the program would easily detect. The app for iOS was certainly easier to use, but I ultimately wound up using the desktop browser interface to create my Auras. It was simply more efficient to take my vision and place the overlay on top of trigger images in the browser interface. I also prefer a mouse and keyboard interface. I did test all the Auras using my phone, but I prefer the browser interface.
Google Expeditions is the program I would be most likely to use in the classroom as it seems to be the most "plug and play program." As I was looking through Google Expeditions I saw several "Tours" I could make use of in my classroom. The only limitation for all of this is my district's policy of devices in the classroom. Every student has been issued a Chromebook device and to keep the playing field level are not allowed to use any other device in the classroom. (Officially...)
I enjoyed seeing what some of the possibilities are for someone who has the time and patience to make complex AR experiences can do. (Check out the "DaVinci's Inventions" tour on Google Expeditions for an example.) I was not blessed with much innate artistic creativity so I appreciate seeing what others came up with, but I struggled to come up with something creative myself.
However, I am pleased with the ultimate result and will probably try to find out a way to actually use this activity in class. I know that I struggle with creativity, so this was really outside of my comfort zone.
